About Dr. Adaeze Oreh
A Consultant Family Physician, Public Health and Policy Specialist, and Universal Healthcare Advocate.
She was appointed Honourable Commissioner for Health in Rivers State in June 2023 by Governor Siminialayi Fubara. Her responsibilities include overseeing a complex network of primary, secondary, and tertiary health facilities for a population of over 9 million people (4% of Nigeria's population), and the sixth most populous state in Nigeria. Her role involves tackling health indices such as low life expectancy rates, general and under-five mortality rates, and one of the highest rates of maternal mortality nationwide.
In her previous role as Nigeria's Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics at the National Blood Transfusion Service, Dr. Adaeze Oreh worked with health and development policymakers at ministerial and sub-ministerial levels to create blood policies that reduce maternal mortality and reduce the transfer of infections such as HIV through unsafe blood transfusions as well as improve the distribution of safely screened blood to the country's most remote areas.
In November 2017, she founded the Kaibeya Care Foundation to provide support for vulnerable and under-served families, linking them with quality affordable healthcare services.
She is also passionate about respectful maternal and newborn healthcare and serves as Non-Executive Board Secretary to the White Ribbon Alliance in Nigeria.
Dr. Oreh is also a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians, a Kofi Annan Public Health Leadership Fellow, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the Royal Society of Public Health.
She is a Senior Aspen New Voices Global Health Fellow with the Aspen Institute in Washington D.C and currently serves as the Public Relations Officer of the Society of Family Physicians FCT Abuja and Keffi Zone, and Executive Member of the Founding Committee of Women in Global Health Nigeria Chapter.
